I am a Cambridgeshire based author and illustrator making picture books and young fiction for primary school age children. I have been doing author visits since my first book came out in 2013 and I’m always excited to meet my readers.
Examples of the types of event/workshops I do include:
A one hour event themed around one of my books. This would include a reading, a quiz/group activity, live drawing from me based on the children’s suggestions, a draw-a-long and a Q&A. This can be adapted to work for small groups of audiences of hundreds.
Workshops about how to make picture books. These are themed around my own how-to book called How to Make a Picture Book. This workshop can either be focused around of aspect of making a book, such as creating characters for coming up with a story structure, or a full-day event where we cover all the elements of making a picture book. The children will come out of the day with the beginnings of their own book and ideas for what to do next. This works best for smaller groups of my to 30 in a classroom setting.
A talk about being an author and an illustrator, how I make my books, how I got started and tips for how you can start writing and illustrating your own stories.
I’m also happy to discuss creating bespoke events and to tie in with themes or topics.
As well as being an author and illustrator, I’m a senior lecturer on the MA in Children’s Book Illustration at the Cambridge School of Art and I have a PhD in humour in children’s books. So, I also do workshops and lectures for adults about many aspects making children’s books.
My fee starts from £250 for a 1 hour event plus travel expenses and I’m happy to work out a combined rate for multiple sessions in a day. I’m willing to travel any distance and stay overnight providing accommodation costs are covered.
